Diosdado T. Valeroso

Independent

Born: July 12, 1959, Manila

Diosdado Valeroso is one of the founders of the Reform the Armed Forces Movement (RAM) together with Danilo Lim, Gregorio Honasan and others in 1982, four years before the 1986 revolution. Valeroso was a fresh graduate from the Philippine Military Academy and a second lieutenant at that time.

The 56-year-old retired Philippine National Police (PNP) chief superintendent, with other partisans including Lim, Rafael Cardeno, Abe Purungganan, Billy Bibit, Tito Legaspi, and Honasan, also decided to go against then President Ferdinand Marcos and succeeded.

When Corazon Aquino came to power, Valeroso, with other young officers established the Young Officers Union or YOU, a revolutionary organization aimed at the attainment of genuine change.

Because of this, he was among those who were arrested and jailed during the time of former President Ramos. He got out of detention due to a pardon from Ramos and went back to the service, opting for a post at the newly established Philippine National Police (PNP).

He became a colonel at the PNP At the PNP and represented the country as police attaché at China to protect the welfare of OFWs based in China.

He continued his work in PNP as chief superintendent when he came back from China, until he retired from his post on July 2015.

In the recent reopening of the Mamasapano probe, the retired police chief superintendent was asked to appear before the Senate. This was after he surfaced and claimed to have a copy of an audio recording between a “ranking government official” and a “lawmaker” who were supposedly talking about an alleged attempt to cover up the real turn of events on the Mamasapano incident. Valeroso however, did not appear.

On the other hand, according to his campaigns for this year’s election, his general thrust is to “present what our people aspire for: an equal opportunity for all, a just, free, humane and progressive society.”

Valeroso also specifically expressed his concern on the improvement and strengthening Philippine’s armed forces.

In his recent Facebook posts, Valeroso criticized the decision of the Supreme Court (SC) not to disqualify presidential aspirant Grace Poe-Llamanzares.

On the other hand, he also expressed his support for the issuance of ballot receipts which was ordered by the SC this May elections.

In 2001, Valeroso, a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class ’82, was also linked to an alleged plot against the administration of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. He was then a special assistant to the executive director of the Philippine Center on Transnational Crimes. As a result, he was transferred to Mindanao.

According to a report from Inquirer.net, the coup rumors became more credible after a “former lieutenant, Baron Cervantes, who claimed to be a YOU spokesperson, was murdered on New Year’s Eve in 2001 just after he alleged that some active and retired military men were planning to destabilize the Arroyo administration.”

Following this, the police had questioned Valeroso and Cardeño on Cervantes’ killing. It was reported that Valeroso had a lengthy exchange of text messages with Cervantes hours before he was gunned down.

Valeroso was later “cleared” of complicity when confessed gunman Joseph Mostrales and suspects Erlindo Torres and Jaime Centeno pointed to Cardeño as the one who had ordered the killing.

Valeroso graduated Associate in Marine Engineering in Philippine Maritime Institute, Quezon City in 1977. After that, he studied Electrical Engineering at Adamson University, Manila and later went to the  Philippine Military Academy where graduated in 1982. In 1998 he had his Master in Development Management in Asian Institute of Management.

He married Eleanor Datuin in January 28, 1984.

Valeroso is also a Rotary Club of Camp Crame Trustee, Board of Trustees of Center for Philippines Futuristics and Management, and a graduate of International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) in Bangkok, Thailand on the Role of Police Leaders in Combating Terrorism in 2009.
