Jay Angelique Jaafar

Independent

Born: September 27, 1969, Sulu

There’s another princess, aside from Jacel Kiram, running for a seat in the senate. This time, she’s not only a princess but also a queen.

Jay Angelique Jaafar, who claims to be a descendant of the royal house of Sulu, holds the title “dayang-dayang” which translates to princess of the Tausugs, a Muslim ethnic group known to be formerly governed by the Sulu Sultanate. She also holds the beauty queen title of Mrs. Southeast Asia, a title given to married women whose advocacies include violence against women and children.

She has recently competed in the Mrs. Universe competition, a global pageant and forum where women philanthropists and human rights champion join.

Although she never held any position in the government, her credentials include being the United Nations (UN) Habitat permanent official representative for indigenous peoples’ (IPs) issues. She has been championing the rights of the IPs in the Philippines, often travelling across the country to assess the on-ground situation of the natives.

The beauty queen’s work ranges from upholding the land rights of the IPs, lack of education to raising concerns about poverty-driven criminality.

In 2011, she was anointed successor of her uncle, the late Rep. Joseph Sibug, as the “Grand Bae” of the Manobo tribe and proclaimed as the President of the Philippine Organization of United Tribal Initiatives Inc.

Jaafar is the mother to Bb. Pilipinas candidate Toni Hipolito, a business woman, general manager of the Celebrity Sports and Country Club and holds a double degree in Nursing and Tourism received from Dr. Carlos Lanting College and La Consolacion College.
